What are databases and database management?

No modern company or organisation can function without data and a system to organize and access this data. In this session, we take a look at what a database is and the different kinds of database types. We also dig into what a database management system (DBMS) is, the role of a database administrator (DBA) and some of the most common databases and DBMS’.

Basic introduction to a simple database

Databases are the foundation of the modern information society. Below is an introduction to the concept of a simple database.

Types of databases

There are different types of databases, of which relational databases are the most common. This video gives you an introduction to the different types of databases and a further introduction to one of the widely used database query language SQL.

The Position of a Database in n-tier Architecture

To truly understand databases, we need to look at how they fit into the software architecture. An “N-tier Architecture“ is the most common software architecture. Let us take a closer look at multi-tier architecture and the role of the database as the lowest layer (the data access layer):

DBA – the role of the Database Administrator

DBA (Database Administrators) are basically database experts that handle IT Operation tasks related to databases. DBAs are most common in larger organisations with a certain complexity in the database landscape and it is our experience that DBA roles are often related to Oracle products

Microsoft SQL Server – one of the most popular relational databases

MS SQL Server is one of the most used relational database servers because of its attributes and its integration with other Microsoft products. We see that the best freelance backend .NET developers have expert knowledge of MS SQL Server. Below is an introduction to Microsoft SQL Server but also some good considerations about databases in general:

Oracle Database Server – widely used database in large organisations

Oracle is the most used database for the largest organisations. In the below video we will dig deeper into core concepts like Memory vs. disk – Oracle background processes, instance vs. database and Single Instance Server:

NoSQL databases – the “Not only Structured Query Language database”

90% of the world’s data has been produced within the last two years, and these extreme amounts of data are not always well suited with traditional relational databases. In consequence, we see an increasing number of customers in need for experts in NoSQL databases. Below is a general introduction to the concept on NoSQL.

Hadoop – a distributed database solution

Hadoop is open-source and used for distributed storage and processing of data. We see it mostly used with customers that have extreme amounts of data and often we also see needs for real “data scientist” that can help this kind of clients derive actual business value from these huge amounts of data.

MongoDB – one of the most popular NoSQL databases

MongoDB is both extremely fast and very flexible and we experience a high demand for freelance MongoDB experts. MongoDB is frequently used in modern, medium-sized organisations, but we are also seeing the first tendencies that it is implemented by large enterprise organsations. Below is a basic introduction to MongoDB
