Who are you, and what led you to the position as a consultant manager at Right People Group?

My name is Hjalmar Lundin and I am the Consultant Manager, Head of Sweden at Right People Group. I chose to move and work for Right People Group because I was looking for a new challenge and thought it was exciting to build a company in Sweden and work with the consultant industry.

What differentiates Right People Group from other IT consultant agencies?

Right People Group works in a heavily saturated market with high competition spoiling both customers and consultants for choice. I believe our key differentiator is our Consultant Managers. This role is unique in the fact that it looks after both the customer relationship and the recruitment of consultants. This means there is minimal information transfer because the person collecting the requirements and project description is the same person speaking to consultants and matching them to the project. This eliminates time, information loss and improves accuracy in the process.

Tell me about a recent project you worked on that illustrates your daily job

My daily job is full of interesting conversations and ideas. I regularly speak to businesses about their upcoming transformations and projects and then go out to our network of consultants across Europe to find the best fitting candidate for that project. When searching for candidates I use a variety of tools across owned and paid mediums to ensure our reach is as wide as possible. The best part of my job is getting to share the new with a consultant that they have been selected as the successful candidate for a project.

Can you share a challenge you faced and how you solved it?

In this role, there are many challenges and various elements that need to align to be successful. I think a key to aligning everything is having an agile mindset and listening to the needs of both the consultant and the customer. A common challenge I run into is the availability of consultants. A recent example of this was when a customer found the right consultant but was not able to guarantee full-time work for them due to project circumstances. We shifted away from the expectation of full time assigned and ran 2-week sprints instead where the workload was determined in advance.

This meant that the consultant and customer could work strategically and get the most out of their time together.

In the hunt for the right consultant for a specific job, what are the most important qualities and traits you look for?

Finding the right consultant for a specific project doesn’t have a cookie-cutter approach. There are many factors that need to be taken into account to ensure they are the right match for the project. Some of the key trends that I can see across all candidates that are successful include,

  • Previous experience in relevant areas to the project. Unfortunately, academic experience and personal projects rarely count as strong enough experience.
  • A strong track record of having previously delivered in projects with good tenure.
  • Good rapport on the phone which instills trust. If a consultant is able to present themselves well to me, I can confidently assume they will do the same for any potential client.

How do you evaluate a project?

Being a smaller sized organization it gives us the flexibility to take on projects that come in all shapes and sizes. I enjoy this flexibility as it means we are able to speak to consultants who are looking for various types of projects. We work with full-time projects spanning longer periods of time as well as shorter projects those consultants who enjoy the flexibility and like to piece together a combination of different projects adding variation to their days. However, my three key criteria metrics for any projects include;

  • Project size, is it financially viable for a consultant to work on this project?
  • Possibility of future partnerships with the client, will this project lead to a great partnership?
  • Reliability, where is the project in the development phase, it is fully scoped, financed and approved?

When do you feel that you did a good job? Give an example if possible

To me, the definition of a good job is being able to seamlessly deliver on our customers’ expectations. One of my proudest achievements was when a customer called me with an urgent need for a consultant. A migration had gone wrong. Within 24 hours I had been able to scan Europe to find a strong consultant who was able to complete the project and start within 24 hours.

This to me is not just a good job, but an excellent one.

What is your greatest career accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment to date is my lack of satisfaction. I am always curious and always looking to push boundaries. I believe that this curiosity and drive will help to drive further accomplishments in the future.

What do you like about your job at RPG and what motivates you to come to work every day?

I am happy I took the role at Right People Group because I am challenged daily and we have a lot of freedom in our days where we can structure our work as we would like and work when it suits us. I am motivated to come to work every day because I get to work with fun customers and consultants who I get to build relationships.

Today you don’t have a choice, IT is an intrinsic part of the world we live in today and I find the innovation it brings to all industries to be very fascinating.
